Job Description

As a Substance Abuse Counselor, you will be responsible for providing counseling and support services to individuals struggling with substance abuse disorders. Your primary role will involve assessing clients, developing treatment plans, conducting therapy sessions, and offering guidance and education to promote recovery and improved overall well-being. You will work closely with clients to address their underlying issues, develop coping strategies, and facilitate their journey toward sobriety.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment and Evaluation:
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine the nature and severity of clients’ substance abuse issues.
    • Evaluate clients’ medical, psychological, and social backgrounds to understand their unique needs and challenges.
    • Identify co-occurring disorders or underlying mental health issues that may contribute to substance abuse.
  • Treatment Planning and Implementation:
    • Develop individualized treatment plans based on clients’ assessment results and collaborate with them to set achievable goals.
    • Utilize evidence-based therapeutic techniques and interventions to address clients’ substance abuse problems effectively.
    • Assist clients in developing coping mechanisms and life skills to support their recovery and prevent relapse.
    • Facilitate individual and group therapy sessions to address various aspects of addiction and recovery.
  • Counseling and Support:
    • Provide empathetic and non-judgmental counseling to clients, promoting a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship.
    • Help clients explore the root causes of their substance abuse, develop insight, and work towards resolution.
    • Offer support and guidance to clients’ families, educating them on addiction dynamics and involving them in the recovery process where appropriate.
    • Collaborate with external agencies and support networks to ensure clients receive holistic care.
  • Education and Prevention:
    • Conduct educational sessions and workshops on substance abuse, addiction, and related topics for individuals and groups.
    • Raise awareness about the risks and consequences of substance abuse, emphasizing preventive measures within the community.
    • Provide resources and referrals to support clients in accessing additional services such as detoxification, medical care, and social services.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and confidential client records, documenting progress, treatment plans, and any significant observations.
    • Prepare reports and maintain statistical data on client outcomes, treatment effectiveness, and program evaluation.
    • Adhere to legal and ethical standards, ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and professional codes of conduct.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications and licenses, such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) or Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC), may be required.
  • Proven experience in substance abuse counseling or a similar role.
  • In-depth knowledge of substance abuse disorders, treatment modalities, and recovery principles.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based therapeutic techniques and counseling theories.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with diverse populations.
  • Excellent communication and active listening skills.
  • Empathy, compassion, and a non-judgmental approach to client care.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Minimum of 15 session hour per week
  • Paneled with BCBS, Cigna, and TriCare (East) Select. If you are not paneled with any of these insurance companies, we will help you with the credentialling process (can take 90 to 120 days).
  • Attend bimonthly staff/peer consultation meetings (optional).

Location

Due to Covid-19, all psychotherapy services are offered exclusively through a telehealth platform. Our therapists have the option to work remotely.

Schedule

Flexible Schedule: Monday to Friday and weekends
